A Brief History of Cuttlefish

Introduction to the Website Archive

I have been using the internet since 1989 and created my first website in 1993. Ever since then I have been documenting my activities (across art, business and research) digitally and I have built up a large archive of websites, pictures, videos, blog posts and items of digital ephemera. I am now starting to upload these materials to a single online location - cuttlefish.org.

After this I will begin on the next phase of the project - developing a conversational AI that will allow people to interact with the archive using natural language.

25 Years of Cuttlefish.Com

The 26th June 2022 marks the 25th anniversary of my registration of the domain name cuttlefish.com. To recognise this milestone, I have written A Brief History of Cuttlefish. The article includes screengrabs of the cuttlefish.com site as it has developed over the years.

1989 - 1996
The Early Days of the Web

The work from this era took place while I was a researcher at Loughborough University and Derby University between 1989 and 1996. Working at a university gave me early access to the internet and I was an active pre-web internet user. In 1993 I created a website about Virtual Reality, which brought me to the attention of Colin Angus from The Shamen and I worked with them on web projects over the following five years. This included at the Megatripolis club and at live events, such as Glastonbury 1995. When I moved from Loughborough to Derby University in 1994 I co-founded arts-group Resonance with Geoff Broadway, Noel Douglas and Jayne Murray, and in 1995 established an early web design company called DRC Internet. Resonance did a lot of events with Birmingham club Oscillate. I also did multimedia work with the band Zion Train and computer artist William Latham. I wrote for lots of magazines in the mid-1990s - most of which I still have copies of. These included popular newsstand titles NetUser and Internet Today. My academic research at this time was mostly concerned with the topics of Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Virtual Reality.
