MA Digital Arts

Digital technology has embedded itself so deeply in creative practice, that it is no longer questioned as a tool or medium. But digital arts students, are encouraged to explore the theoretical implications of this technology. And whether this is looking at production of, or the interaction with an artwork, a project proposal will allow the student to embark on detailed research into the contextual and practical aspects of the project. The use of blogs and wikis by all students and staff, is vital to encouraging collaboration and building a dynamic cohort, based across the UK, Europe and the globe. This medium along with seminars, lectures and tutorials, allow the student to engage in both the practical and theoretical issues that underpin their practice within the arena of digital arts and new media.

Whether the course is being studied form distance [online] or here at Camberwell, the student is expected to engage in detailed and challenging research. The distance mode of the course runs completely online and attendance is not required at any point. Themed exhibitions and events are aimed at developing communication between the modes of delivery, and enhancing the student experience by expanding the cohort to the whole MA cohort. Importantly these events allow the students to explore the possibilities of communication in the digital era.

"In the theatre of repetition, we experience a language which speaks before words, gestures which develop before organized bodies, masks before faces, specters and phantoms before characters – the whole apparatus of repetition as a 'terrible power'".(G. Deleuze, Difference & Repetition)

My work explores the possibilities of combining the advantages of animation-films with those of picture books, blending digital-media with analogue-media and visualising heart-warming messages from narrative stories I wrote to make children and parents respond emotionally and encourage them to communicate by the interactive-animation and the maps in a play-space.

Wherever I am I always carry a camera with me. My photographs explore the concept of "transit", the situation of not staying and not having arrived yet. Transit means "to go through", "trespassing borders", "progress". My practice-based research focuses on visualising details, visual encodings and borders of my surrounding.

Miniature worlds is a fantasy/fictional take on the power of magnification. It is the idea of hidden worlds concealed within everyday objects. The animation takes the form of a digital picture book where the viewer can control which world they dip in and out of on their interactive journey.

Within the context of the digitally transferred image, I work by externalising constructs formed through walking and mapping experiential journeys / interventions, generated through mixes / remixes stimulated by the landscape @ 55 degrees north. Using passive and proactive mechanisms I invite the percipient to join my experience.
