By way of a "busman's day off" I went up to Rosen to visit Alan and record the blues band he has put together with Gary and his family.
They played outside of the local shop, much to the amusement and bemusement of the locals.
I made the film in a couple of hours using iMovie stright after recording. Then I popped it on YouTube the next day. It was the first time I'd used iMovie 2. It's *so* simple to use.
Technology can be amazing.

Phew. I've finished my two essays for the final MA submission. It's been quite a challenge getting my ideas expressed in the limited word count allowed, but I think the results capture everything. I've also been collecting my assessment evidence together and have include it in the essay document. One of the good things about doing this has been the realisation that I've actually been pretty busy over the past few years! 100 blog posts, videos, pictures and various exhibitions - that's a decent output for what was intended to be a couple of years 'reflecting' rather than producing new work and exhibiting. The Artist's Statement and Reflection essays can be downloaded from this site.
Theatre company Metro-Boulot-Dodo have been performing "Night Scene" at various venues on the Black Sea as part of the SEAS festival. I went to see the show in the Varna "Comics Club" last night.
As always with MBD, it was not a conventional show. It look the form of a video crew making a film in the club, with clubbers being drafted in as "extras".
The footage was then edited in the club and the resulting film shown at the end of the evening. Very creative, and very hard work!
I helped with the production by adapting my "ArtScanner" project for use in the show.
Pictures from the show can be found on my Flickr page.
Nature is amazing. I left my garden completely clear in March. I come back in May and it is full of the most amazingly diverse range of plants. My artwork is all about 'systems', but I'll never come anywhere near to the sophistication of the systems at work in the natural world! Oh well...
I decided to volunteer to do the MA08 Web site. I registered the www.ma08.org.uk domain name a while ago, but now is the time to start building the site. Starting with a draft of the paper catalogue, I've pulling out the details of each student and creating a page on the Web site for them. It's going to be a fairly long process!
I went to see I went to see German band Einstürzende Neubauten play in their home town of Berlin this weekend. A good gig in a great city. See some some pictures on Flickr and a video on YouTube.
I've just about finished the 'Autopoieis I' and have been testing it in the studio. I think it works very well. By moving in front of the video camera the viewer/participant causes the two recorded video streams to mix. An image of the viewer/participant is then added to this. So long as there is movement in front of the artwork the process continues, when the movement stops the image (and sound) fades away.
I've been a Facebook user for quite a while, but I've only just gotten around to creating Facebook pages for the various projects I am involved in. You can now find the following Cuttlefish related pages on Facebook:
Depending on their success I will consider adding pages for other projects in the future.
I've been spending much of my time recently creating the Max/MSP/jitter patch for my 'Autopoiesis' installation. I've decided to call it 'Autopoiesis I' from now on since I expect this to be the first of many related and interconnected artworks.
'Autopoiesis I' uses my 'city people' footage and mixes it with a live recording of the person or people interacting with the artwork.
The Max/MSP/Jitter patch uses many of the best bits of my earlier 'digital art-systems' installations. In particular, I'm using the time-delayed video loop feature of 'We Are Not' alone to process the video of the viewer. This creates gentle 'video feedback' effect around the viewer.
I found a collection of photographs that were taken during the 'Moving Science' project I was involved in in 2006.
This was a really enjoyable project that involved pupils from local schools and combined digital arts (hence my involvement) with dance. It led to a show at the national Space Centre in Leicester.
The photographs can be found on my Flickr page.
