Bella Union are certainly a current contender for the record label of the moment. They keep discovering bands and consistently releasing fabulous records like Belfast's Cashier No. 9's debut album To The Death of Fun. Produced by the mighty David Holmes this was one of their best records (along with Fleet Foxes) of last year. Their sound lies somewhere in a new avenue leading off from 60's psych, 80's indie and 90's shoegazers. This leads to some interesting places, they have untapped sunshine fuelled songs like the wistful Lost At Sea and what could easily be a Stone Roses single in Goldstar These are reminiscent of West Coast Byrds and CSN in feel, though there are other forces at work, with a throbbing hypnotic quality all their own on darker songs like Oh Pity. They have racked up a huge number of fans in the UK and abroad with their live show. The band have represented Belfast at London's Electric Proms; performed at the Knitting Factory in New York and Brighton's Great Escape; and graced the stage at Ireland's Electric Picnic festival.
