Kitty Clark - Mr Nobody
Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2016 - Sun, 20 Nov 2016
Venue: Phoenix Cube Gallery, Leicester
Through an installation of sculptural works and virtual reality environments, the show explores the concept of technostress – a term coined to describe the negative psychological relationship between people and new technologies.
Technostress manifests itself physically, psychologically and behaviourally as a result of overexposure to technology. Computer rage – a side effect of this phenomenon – has driven people to verbally and physically assault their devices, in some extreme cases involving the use of weapons against an individual's own computer as a way of coping with intense frustration.
Taking cues from the subculture of competitive case modding – in which computer cases are modified decoratively or to highlight the device's inner workings – and high spec PC customisation, the exhibition features pieces of engraved acrylic sculpture alongside animatronic works and virtual reality environments that offer refuge in the manufactured calm of computer generated worlds.
Clark's work highlights a sense of anxiety and fear as our desire for digital salvation is replaced by a darker and more complex relationship with technology.
An accompanying event will take place alongside the exhibition in November to coincide with the inaugural Leicester Art Week – details coming soon.
