MA Illustration
Over the last twenty years the discipline of illustration has undergone major changes; computers and the Internet have transformed the way that people communicate and have influenced the production of media. Illustrators consequentially have had to face these challenges both ethically and creatively. Should they leave all traditional methods of image making behind them, or remain with the tried and trusted methods of working?
MA Illustration positions itself at the centre of this debate. Many Illustrators work in both digital and traditional mediums, allowing for the combination of skills such as drawing, printmaking and three-dimensional art combined with digital processes. One issue, however, that has remained constant throughout this period of change, is the illustrator's search for a personal visual language, a unique voice to carry forward into the world of communication.

My work explores a darker side of romance through different media, illustrations, animations and models, with references to the past masters of that style, such as Gustave Dore or Edward Gorey and a touch of surrealistic ornementation.

Suzanne Duffy
Responses and observations on a social and cultural level form the backdrop to my illustration practice. The juxtaposition of unlikely sources, minority, marginalised or vulnerable elements, to seek attention for them. The public environment has proved appropriate to situate the work and has enabled practical as well as thematic development.

I am inspired by the work of outsider artists, the satirical engravings of Hogarth, old theatre posters, punk rock, German Expressionists, magic acts, deception, mediums, sideshows, fairy tales, Walter Potter, ballroom dancing, Hammer Horror, Goya, cabaret, tattoo art, the Georgian and Victorian age, Nolde’s watercolours, costume, disguise and faded glamour.
