This was a project to conserve an album of pressed flowers (an exsiccata) belonging the Florence Nightingale Museum. It includes a report on its found condition, the issues researched for its successful conservation, and a discussion about the treatments that were deployed and why. The result is on display.

My research and practical works are an association between iron gall ink and the Relative Humidity field. Both areas are very vast in information. Those references have proved to be extremely important to the treatment decision making. In this particular case the iron gall ink part of the book is submitted to a Conservation treatment.

A survey of the Horniman's herbaria collection enabled the selection of a bound herbaria volume for conservation treatment. The volume was chosen for its high curatorial value being part of F.J.Horniman's original collection, and for its display potential. Its poor overall condition also meant that it required extensive and timely conservation. The way the volume opened presented an ethical dilemma with its future use, either as a display piece or an object to be handled necessitating a consideration of its structure. In all respects as much of the original material and binding was kept as possible.

The document from 1623 century was extradited by James I king of England and Wales. The parchment document and seals were in very poor condition. The aim was not just treat the object to the appropriate physical standard but also deal successfully with ethical conservation issues.

My conservation project reflects my applied arts background. My interest is in mixed media and my final project has three separate areas to be treated, paper, photographs and leather binding. Other areas that interest me are textiles, plastics and artifacts that have been affected by disasters such as fire and flood.
