Loss and Gain: Leicester Media School Showcase
Date: Sat, 03 May 2014 - Fri, 16 May 2014
Venue: Phoenix Cube
Loss and Gain is a sound installation which invites visitors to consider what it means to hear and what it means to listen.
Loss and Gain allows visitors to experience how hearing impairment can affect the perception of our surroundings, how traditional hearing aids can potentially further impair this perception, and how the 3D audio technologies developed at De Montfort University could help to recover those spatial cues lost with impairment and with the use of traditional hearing aid devices. Visitors will experience a variety of immersive 3D sound environments presented over a bespoke 36-channel speaker array.
Beyond the physical experience of hearing, Loss & Gain also invites visitors to consider the cognitive process of listening and reflecting upon sound through these 3D sound environments. Some present elemental environmental materials in their raw states, others explore these more compositionally. One presents the recorded results of a Deep Listening workshop which considers multicultural perspectives upon water from current Leicester residents who express memories of water—and of listening to water—in their native languages.
Loss and Gain connects visitors with a deeper experience in which the body, surrounded by these sounds, might remember its most primal listening experience. The installation has been created by Lorenzo Picinali, Peter Batchelor and Ximena Alarcón. With the support of Alex Perron and Phoenix, multichannel dome design by Ian Bilson and Andrew Foxwell.
