Join us for a meteorological fair to celebrate the launch of Nowcasting, a programme of new commissions responding to the weather station on campus. Taking place on World Meteorological Day the event will feature artist's projects, refreshments and a range of family friendly experiments and demonstrations, from creating clouds and tornadoes with household items, to the use of food as a biosensor to map air quality.
There will be a chance to find out about the Nowcasting commissions including Alistair McClymont's Sun and Wind Simulacrum, an installation simulating weather conditions using basic domestic appliances. Having previously made night-time rainbows and suspended raindrops in mid-air using deceptively simple machines, this new work continues Alistair's interest in capturing natural, often overlooked occurrences.
Plans will also be revealed for The Prediction Machine, an interactive artwork by Rachel Jacobs, which will provide 'climate fortunes' based upon data captured via the weather station. The final work, which will be exhibited at the end of October, will be informed by a series of workshops exploring how we can predict and sense 'climate change moments'.
