Leila Houston

Leila Houston is a British Artist working with video, photography, sound and installation. She trained in Fine Art at De Montfort University. After graduating from a Masters in 2012 her work has been part of a solo platform at Phoenix in Leicester, and shown internationally at Beauville, Lot Sur Garonne, France. In addition she has been invited to develop site responsive projects as part of EC Arts regeneration project at The Salon, as well as responding to the view of the top floor building at The New Walk Centre, Leicester.

The work she makes is site responsive, exploring perception, sensation and expectation. Her practice involves decoding and then making connections between things often identifying a particular sensation of something serene, quiet and uniquely haunting.

Currently focusing on the Frog island area of Leicester, Leila created a site-responsive body of work that investigates the relationship between the former All Saints Brewery site and the commercial landscape of Highcross that faces it. This work has developed from an interest in exploring Leicester's history and visually investigating not only the words 'Frog Island', but also the name 'Leicester' as it is thought to derive from the words castra of the 'Ligore', meaning camp of the dwellers on the river.

The work records personal moments of contemplation and imagined narrative that arise from the combination of regeneration and neglected spaces allowing pockets of wildlife and forgotten history to live alongside the newly-built environment.
