The Binaural Experience is a full day event for newcomers and hardened fanatics alike exploring the cutting edge of sound design through a series of innovative workshops and performances. Focussing on the concept of 'spacial' hearing and binaural sound, participants will learn how to use hearing to interpret the spaces and environments around them, and how binaural techniques can transport you to both familiar and unfamiliar sonic surroundings.

Workshops
Microphone Construction:
Build and take home your own stereo microphone, with adjustable high gain pre-amlifiers. This sensitive mic is capable of creating sophisticated binaural recordings. The workshop is suitable for people without any prior knowledge of soldering or DIY electronics. Within the workshop you will cover soldering basics, troubleshooting and testing, followed by a practical demonstration. Binaural Synthesis:
Participants will be introduced to spatial hearing and binaural synthesis techniques. Using MaxMSP, you will be guided through the creation of a real-time binaural spatialization patch. During the workshop, a dummy head will be used to measure Head Related Transfer Functions, these HRTFs will then be processed and imported into your patch - so they can be used to generate realistic and interactive 3D soundfields. Every participant is asked to bring a computer with a MaxMSP license (versions 4.6, 5 or 6), and a pair of headphones.
Evening Concert:
A concert of binaural audio works featuring live performances by members of the Dirty Electronics Ensemble and a selection of studio composed works by international artists. Each piece has been specifically devised for binaural sound, making maximum use of the immersive properties of binaural audio.
Established in 2003 by Dr John Richards, the Dirty Electronics Ensemble focuses on face-to-face shared experiences, ritual, gesture, touch and social interaction - www.dirtyelectronics.org.
