Penumbra

Out of the open spaces of the Northumberland 'Triangle' emerges the manipulated sonic excursions of Penumbra.

Ambient, experimental, improvised or just 'wierd', each project from this tone adventurer takes off in a different direction.

Utilizing anything that comes to hand and emits some sound or noise, flitting between analog and digital domains, lo-fi pragmatism and practical realities, found sound and location recordings. A believer in digital piracy and extremely fond of electronic toys, A+B CD, loops and repeat functions, Penumbra creates constantly shifting soundworlds where short waves and long delays phase in space and melt away.

From lo-fi beginnings in 1994 Penumbra is a side project from one half of the Newcastle Upon Tyne based 'experimentalists' :sophie & franz:. As a member of this pioneering artsound combo Penumbra has visited Germany (Urban Aboriginals '96), Holland (many times including sessions for VPRO Radio and Staalplaat), France, Belgium, Austria (Ars Electronica '96), Czech Republic, throughout Scandinavia (with Oslo based dance company Zero Visibility) and across the UK including at the Big Chill Gala '96, the Newcastle Dance Festival (with reknowned Japanese choreographer Sabuo Teshigawa and his company Karas). They have also staged a series of celebrated live improvisations, firstly with intelligent technoists Autechre and with world famous reedsman and free improvisation icon Evan Parker, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and most recently in the Sound Exploration Room at Zion Train's Bass Odyssey where they mixed a live 8 hour improvised set featuring Evan Parker, Pete Lawrence (Big Chill DJ), Technoise/Hyware (Dutch Noise master) and Nelson Dilation (Anokha, Trans-Global Underground, Natasha Atlas DJ).
