The scenic route is a collaboration about 'The Car' between myself and Female Year 10 students at Highview Technology Centre, Landau Forte College and Woodlands Community School, all situated in Derby.Originally concieved as an opportunity for women to work with new technologies such as digital imaging and the Internet, the project set out to challenge the stereotypical limitations and assumptions women face when using such technology.
Using available resources at each school the project evolved through ongoing classes to discuss and produce images under the broad theme of the car.
As we entered this traditionally male domain many issues were raised, from the myth of 'women drivers' to the ploys of advertising and road 'development' schemes. These themes are reflected along the scenic route.
The scenic route combines my own practice of digital appropriation and manipulation with the individual response of each girl to the car, leaving enjoyable and thoughtful images that form a representation of the car from a non-driving, non-car owning female perspective.
