The HCI'93 Virtual Reality Exhibition

This exhibition was one of a number of Virtual Reality events which took place at HCI'93. It ran throughout the conference and was located in a room near the main entrance to the conference hall.

The "VR Room" contained six experimental VR systems. Some used inexpensive "home-brew" technologies and freeware software while others used more expensive hardware and commercial "world building toolkits". All systems illustrated the potential of this rapidly growing area of Human Computer Interaction (HCI).

In addition to the VR exhibits, the VR Room also contained a "Video Booth" which showed video tapes illustrating the kind of visual entertainment that may become possible when VR enters the home.

• The Imaging and Displays Research Group from De Montfort University, Leicester, UK were demonstrating a variety of 3D imaging devices.
• Chris Hand has demonstrated his 'classic' home-brew VR system using Shutter Glasses, a PowerGlove and REND386 on a PC.
• The exhibit from Department of Psychology at the University of Edinburgh was entitled Perception and Action in Virtual Realities.
• The Nottingham group were demonstrating possible interaction styles in multi-user virtual worlds.
• Ben Salem was demonstrating his prototype glove input device - REALGlove.
• Robin Hollands from Sheffield University, UK was demonstrating his SWOOPVR Virtual Reality based industrial simulation system.
