WHY WE NEED FATS & SUGAR |

|
- Foods in this group, such as cakes, biscuits, sweets, fizzy drinks and spreads, provide energy but few other nutrients required for a healthy diet.
- Food energy is measured in calories. If we eat more calories than our bodies need, it is stored as fat and we put on weight.
- Not all fat is bad. Some fats are as important as vitamins and help to protect us against heart disease. The EFA'S (Essential Fatty Acids)called Omega 3 fats are found in oily fish such as sardines, tuna and also olive oil.
- Sugar contains only calories and has no real nutritional benefit. It is not essential for energy - you get energy from all the food you eat.
- Many sugary foods are also high in fat.
- Sugary foods are the worst culprit for causing tooth decay
