KARATE
I started doing karate when I was 13. I really wasn't very good at first and I nearly gave it up early on. I'm not the typical person you would think to do something like karate.

I stayed with it and have now passed my brown belt - the black belt comes after a few more stages. I don't know that many other girls who practice karate but it's really good for confidence and fitness.

It's important to get a good teacher, someone who knows about all the different aspects and is prepared to see you as an individual.

We do different things like fitness training, kata - which is like formal patterns of movement , freestyle - fighting but without contact so you have to be very controlled and basic techniques. Some people who are more experienced also do breaking, objects like wood, tiles and bricks. I've broken wood before and it's amazing what it does for your confidence - these techniques are real and it brings out your self belief. Bricks are another matter - but who knows. You have to know what you are doing.

I think that anyone can do it. You just have to want to do it enough to keep going. It's really good for you.
