Schizophrenia - "Schizo", "Psycho" |
My favourite uncle has schizophrenia, and it scared me so much I spent a lot of time finding out exactly what it is.
It is a severe mental health problem where the person suffering from it can hear voices telling them to do bad things to themselves or others or sees things that are not really there.
It can also have the effect of making them feel very depressed.
In our society, we use the word “schizo” to mean mad or split personality when, in fact, these are not the real signs of schizophrenia. Anybody of any age can get schizophrenia and it is an illness that can destroy lives!
A series of drugs - my uncle takes quite a few pills every day, I think -can be taken but they often have the effect of numbing the senses and "slowing down" that person's mind.
Using the word “schizo” can be very offensive to some people, as can using the name of the illness in the wrong context. It is not an uncommon illness and people with it and their families need a lot of time and care from other people to cope with it.
